The Good bad and ugly of Carlisle PA

Are you thinking about moving to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and want somebody to give you the bottom line of what it’s really like? In this episode of Homemade PA, I’m going to give you the good, the bad, and the ugly of living right here in Carlisle. We’ll look at everything from the community to the weather so you know exactly what to expect.

A Small-Town Community

The first and most popular reason people love living in Carlisle is the sense of community. Carlisle is a small town made up of 40,000 people. It’s very common to walk down the street and know the person coming in the opposite direction.

I love knowing people everywhere I go; it’s a sense of family here. That’s why so many people that come here with the United States Army War College return to retire.

The Cost Of Living

The second reason why people love living here is the cost of living. While the price of goods is increasing all across the country, we are sheltered to an extent. We don’t see the large swings in home prices and food prices the way others across the country have.

Carlisle offers a reasonable price of living. This is why people who grew up here tend to stay here.

All Four Seasons

The third reason that people love to live here is the weather. We have all four seasons in Carlisle, and we have them for an equal amount of time. You’re able to enjoy swimming in the summer, a hayride in the fall, snow coming down in the winter, and the flowers blooming in the spring. We love our weather.

Now that you’ve heard a few of the pros, you need to know some of the cons. If you’re serious about moving here, you need to know this stuff.

Trucks And The Valley

Did you know that Carlisle is the trucking capital of the Northeast? Yes, that’s correct. You can get to 1/3 of the United States population within a day’s truck drive from Carlisle. We’re where the interstates intersect, which is why so many trucking companies and distribution centers are headquartered here. Keep in mind, though, that it does bring a lot of jobs to our local area.

If you can deal with the trucks, then maybe you won’t mind living in the valley. Carlisle is located between two mountains, the North Mountain and the South Mountain. This makes our air quality a little on the poor side. It holds in the pollen and the humidity, making our allergies a little worse than in other areas.

However, it does make our area a great place for hiking. You can also find beautiful views from either mountain. I hate the allergies here, and if you’re like me, you’re just going to need to pop some pills and take some local honey.

Shopping Malls

One more thing you need to be prepared for is our lack of shopping malls. Some would say this is a pro about our area. Don’t expect to go to a big shopping mall, as we don’t have them in Carlisle.

However, within a short drive, you can get to anything that you need. So if shopping is important to you, you might need to head out of Carlise to do it.
